Jana Purkis-Brash, Senior Pastor

Dear Friends,

I share with you some information about myself, my family and my ministry. I am a “jersey girl.” I was born the oldest of 4 children in Hackensack (North Jersey).  As a child I lived in the Edison area until my dad’s company moved out to Long Island.  I spent 10 years out there, coming back to New Jersey to attend Drew Theological School in 1979.

Don Brash was the first person I met at Drew (I didn’t like him at first).  We were married in the seminary chapel in August 1981.  I graduated in 1982 and went to my first appointment as pastor of Wesley & Saint Paul’s United Methodist Churches, in Roselle.  Don continued with his PhD work at Drew.

In June of 1985 I was ordained as an Elder in the Northern New Jersey Annual Conference and a few weeks later Don was ordained as a pastor in the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey.

In 1987 I accepted my second appointment in Dunellen.  While serving in Dunellen our daughter Leah was born.  Shortly after that Don accepted a “call” (Baptist term) to serve as pastor of the Hamilton Sq. Baptist Church.

We moved to Hamilton Sq. in 1990, and while in Hamilton, I served as pastor of the Lower Bank and Green Bank United Methodist Churches and then as Chaplain at Mercer County College and finally for 8 years as Associate Pastor at Saint Mark United Methodist Church.  During this time Don began teaching at what is now Palmer Theological Seminary in Wynnewood, Pa.

In 2000 we moved to Medford where I have been serving as co-pastor with Ernie Williams at the Medford United Methodist Church.  In this time Don left pastoral ministry to teach full time and is now Associate Professor of Historical Theology.  In June 2007 Leah graduated from Shawnee High School and is currently finishing a Cosmetology program at the Rizzieri Aveda School for Beauty and Wellness in Marlton.  She’s looking forward to a full time job after graduation.

We are looking forward to our move to Princeton, the church and the town.  Leah likes that the church looks like a church should (she’s tired of contemporary architecture).  Don is looking forward to lending his tenor voice to the choir, taking the train to school, (rather than the drive thru Philly) and using the Princeton Libraries.

I’m excited about sharing in ministry with a group of people who are looking at who God is calling them to be and what God is calling them to do.  I’m looking forward to developing a new staff that will grow together as a team, to share in ministry with the congregation.

In Christ,
Jana Purkis-Brash
